The Bon Odori Festival

Our home suburb had the Bon Odori festival on Septmeber 2nd and 3rd, 2001. This means for the last week Kita Kogane has been very pretty, as the streets have been lined with lanterns. Unfortunately some of the beauty and mystique of the lanterns was dispelled when it was revealed to us that the Kanji (japanese characters) displayed on each lantern were actually tacky advertising slogans for various local companies. Anyway, the festival was nonetheless enchanting, authentic and cool. The deafeningly loud music was stirring, and we were almost overcome with the urge to dance the Bon Odori ourselves, despite our lack of coordination and familiarity with the dance. however we thought better of it - best not to embarass ourselves or offend the locals with our funky Gaijin dancing. We did however take many a photo, especially of the cute kids in Yukatas (less formal Kimonos). Here is a small sample of what we saw:
